A Memory -- Christmas Cactus

A couple of days ago on a return from a hike, I stopped at a cactus greenhouse which was advertising Christmas Cactus. The image brought back memories of my childhood. My mother had many plants and one of those was a Christmas Cactus which I remember seeing in bloom. Not sure how often it bloomed or when. Recollections of the pink blooming plant caused me to make an impulse purchase of a Christmas Cactus -- aka Holiday Cactus

In twelve years of nomadic travels, this is the first plant I have acquired. I have managed to complicate my life -- just a little. It will be a challenge to properly care to keep it alive to bloom again.

What have I done! I could have enjoyed the memory.

  1. Remember it's a cactus and don't over-water it.

  2. I bet the cactus will help keep your mother's memory alive.

    1. I have lots of memories of my mother. A new memory was recalled when I saw that sign for the Christmas cactus.

  3. We have a Christmas Cactus that we brought from home. It rode on the dashboard, but then Olivia decided it tasted good. In other words, she pruned it for us. But it is thriving after almost two years. Like Susan said, only water it when the soil is totally dry. If you forget to water it, the leaves will wrinkle/pucker, but water brings it right back to original condition.

By the way, we also travel with the following potted herbs & veggies: tomato, sweet basil, Thai basil, mint and leek. No problems here.

    1. Hmmm. An herb garden on the road. This could get interesting.

  4. I think I need something green in my home. I tried using artificial plants once, but they didn't work for me. I've had three small plants for a year now, and one of them has bloomed. (I don't like it much, though, and will probably leave it at the dumpster - maybe on Christmas. That would be nice for someone.) It's very homey to me when I have living plants nearby. Maybe because my mom, too, had plants in our house when I was growing up. She could make anything bloom. :)

    2. Artificial plants would have been a better idea. They are much easier to keep green. :-))
