Hood Ornament

Once upon a time cars had hood ornaments. Started out as a decoration/handle for the radiator cap. When the radiator was under the hood, the ornaments continued on the front of the hood. With each model year, the manufacturers modified or stream lined the hood ornament and sometimes it was nothing more than the auto logo.

Eventually the hood ornaments or hood decoration disappeared from most cars and trucks.

What was the auto brand that wore this hood ornament. Small clue: the brand no longer exists.

  2. That is definitely they ornament from a Plymouth. That used to be as you said a great way of identifying many a vehicle. Part of the reason for them disappearing was pedestrians being hit by cars were being impaled on them so the Safety Board said stop making those.

The last hold out on those ornaments just recently was MACK trucks.Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  3. You are right. It is a hood ornament from a Plymouth. When looking at hood ornaments years ago, always wondered what a clipper ship had to do with a Plymouth. Whatever the real reason, landing of the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock is the symbol that was chosen for the Plymouth car. That symbol was actually preceded by a mermaid on the hood. The photo of this ornament dates to Plymouths of 1933-34. Over the years the symbol was stylized and streamlined.

  4. Lovely photo; I was glad someone else know about the make! I was sure puzzled. Must make restoring such cars with the original ornament a real pain. Nice to see though when someone gets it right.
