Friday Photo

A long time ago farming was done with horses. Not tractors. In the 1940s, this would have been a scene on the Wisconsin farm where I grew up. A photo in the 1940s would have been black and white. :-))

This photo was from a 2003 visit to Heritage Days at the Heritage Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

  1. Great memories to have - horses helping with the work on the farm. And those are beautiful horses. Now it's all mechanical I'd bet. We are sure losing the old and not replacing it with much that we can save.

I had a long conversation with my son yesterday - he has the Ledger that my first husband and I used to record all our expenditures in the 60's and 70's - everything we bought and all the bills for every month are there. Recorded mostly in my hand, sometimes in their dad's writing. He and my daughter had fun going through it together on Thanksgiving. We were saying, that's a thing of the past. Everything is now done on-line. All my spreadsheets now are on Excel. Our whole life was apparent in that Ledger. A thing of the past now.

  2. Those horses look almost like my grandfather’s Dolly and Dobbin. My older brother remembers sometimes sitting on the back of Dolly and a girl cousin on Dobbin as Grandpa was cultivating, when they were little. I suspect because Grandma was tired of the pair (my brother) causing trouble. ; >)

  3. I was going to say that I bet the typical farmer didn't have beautifully matched plow horses but then I read the previous comment and realized again that I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

  4. I haven't been to that museum. It's amazing to me that the more I try to uncover all the secrets in Wisconsin the more I find. Is it the same down in the desert? I hope someday I get to find out.
