Distant Rain At Sunset

This was a most unusual rain cloud in the distance. Looking across the horizon to the west is this single rain cloud. The small shaft of rain from the cloud to the ground is dropping rain on a very small portion of the terrain.

While taking photos of the sunset rain cloud, I was not fortunate to capture one of the frequent lightening bolts from the cloud. It would have made a great photo. A memory will have to suffice.

  2. One of the cruelties of the hot summer desert are little showers like this. One side of the street to the other can have had rain and the other none. Also, at least in the Texas summers I am more familiar with, this sort of cloud and it's rain hides the fact that a Virga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virga) is also occurring at the same time. All of the rain droplets are not reaching the ground, as many on the edges evaporate into the hot, dry air before ever reaching the ground.

Still, a very cool photo capture!

    1. The camera doesn't pick up the virga in this photo. Some was visible on the edges of that very narrow shaft of rain.
